Papiton Dive

Papiton Dive operates in the heart of the Komodo National Park, one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet. Located in Manggarai Barat, the centre provides access to the varied topography of the region, from shallow reef flats to dramatic vertical walls and submerged seamounts.

The centre is locally owned and operated, ensuring that your diving directly supports the Indonesian community. This local connection means the team possesses an intimate knowledge of the park's complex currents and seasonal shifts.

Instruction is provided in English and Indonesian. The team focuses on safety and environmental stewardship, employing experienced local guides who specialise in navigating the specific conditions of the Komodo archipelago.

As an SSI dive centre, Papiton Dive offers a comprehensive curriculum for all levels. Beginners can start with Try Scuba or the Open Water Diver course, while more experienced divers can progress through Advanced Open Water Diver and Rescue Diver certifications.

The professional track is well-supported, with full Divemaster course packages available. For those looking to refine specific skills, the centre provides specialties including Deep Diver, Enriched Air Nitrox, Perfect Buoyancy, Computer Diving, and Navigation.

There is also a strong emphasis on marine science, with dedicated courses in Shark Ecology, Manta and Ray Ecology, Coral Identification, and various other marine ecology specialties.

The PapitonDive is a traditional Phinisi boat, built to provide a stable and comfortable platform for daily excursions. This large vessel is designed to accommodate divers for three-dive days, offering ample space to relax between entries.

On board, you will find a buffet lunch, snacks, coffee, tea, and water. The boat is equipped with dedicated space to keep your personal belongings dry and includes facilities to ensure a comfortable day on the water.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, including regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits. For those looking to capture the marine life, GoPro cameras and other underwater camera accessories are available for hire.

Technical equipment such as dive computers and compasses can also be rented. Nitrox is available for use on all boat trips, and the centre maintains a high standard of equipment maintenance to ensure reliability.

The reefs are teeming with life, ranging from large pelagics to intricate reef dwellers. You will regularly encounter reef sharks (Carcharhinus), turtles, and large schools of fusiliers, snappers, and jacks. In the deeper sections or near seamounts, look for dogtooth tuna, barracuda, and various species of rays.

The hard and soft coral architecture provides a vibrant backdrop, with massive sponges, sea fans, and gorgonians covering the walls. You will often see colourful reef fish, including parrotfish, butterflyfish, and surgeonfish, navigating the coral gardens.

For macro enthusiasts, the area is a specialist's dream. The sites are rich in nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), octopus, cuttlefish (Sepiidae), frogfish (Antennarius), and ghost pipefish, alongside pygmy seahorses and various species of shrimp.

Seasonality plays a role in certain sightings, with reef manta rays being most frequently observed between December and March.

Diving in Komodo requires an understanding of the local currents, which can range from calm and negligible to strong and unpredictable. The guides select sites based on your experience level to ensure safety during drift dives.

The region experiences a dry season from April to November, characterised by calmer seas and high visibility. The rainy season, from December to March, typically sees fewer boats on the water but coincides with the season for manta ray sightings.
