Crystal Rock, Komodo: Pinnacle diving with pelagic sharks

Dropping onto Crystal Rock is an immersion into a vibrant, current-swept ecosystem, a close relative to the renowned Castle Rock in the Lintah Strait. As you descend, the rock’s structure quickly reveals itself as a pinnacle, a submerged mountain peak rising from the depths. The nutrient-rich waters that sweep through this strait ensure that every surface is teeming with life, drawing in a constant flow of pelagics that make this site a high-adrenaline encounter.

The dive profile typically involves a descent directly into the thick of the action, with productive scouting between 10 and 30 metres. The current here is a defining feature, variable but often strong, sculpting the marine life and dictating the dance of the larger fish. You'll find yourself navigating around the pinnacle, using the topography to shield from or propel you through the water, while always keeping an eye on the open blue.

This is prime territory for shark encounters, with whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) a regular sight, often found resting or patrolling the ledges. Joining them are the assertive grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), sleek and powerful, moving with purpose through the water column. Observing their natural hunting patterns and social behaviors in these dynamic conditions is a highlight for any diver.

Beyond the apex predators, the sheer density of schooling fish at Crystal Rock is astounding. You’ll witness colossal schools of giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis), a blur of silver as they swirl and feed, often utilizing the current to their advantage. Equally impressive are the formations of surgeonfish and fusiliers, which gather in such numbers that they can momentarily obscure your view of the pinnacle itself, a truly immersive experience.
