Batu Bolong, Komodo: Pinnacle diving among soft coral gardens

Dropping into Batu Bolong, you immediately feel the energy of a site where two vast oceanic systems converge. This tiny pinnacle, seemingly insignificant on a chart, erupts from the depths, its slopes a riot of colour and life. The current, often a defining feature of Komodo diving, can vary dramatically, but it’s this constant flow that feeds the soft corals, making them swell and sway in a hypnotic dance.

As you descend, the sheer density of coral growth becomes evident. Batu Bolong's hard and soft coral cover is, reputedly, unmatched within the entire Komodo National Park. This vibrant ecosystem creates a perfect habitat and hunting ground. You'll find yourself gliding alongside walls carpeted in sponges and gorgonian fans, while schools of reef fish swarm around every outcrop, providing a constant display of activity.

The pelagic action at Batu Bolong is another key draw. Look out into the blue where reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) are frequently seen patrolling the perimeter of the pinnacle. These apex predators move with an effortless grace, often circling from deeper sections up towards the shallower reaches.

Alongside the sharks, the site is known for its resident Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), identifiable by their distinctive hump and often inquisitive nature. These large, charismatic fish cruise through the currents with a calm authority, often pausing to examine divers before continuing their patrols of the reef. Their presence adds to the feeling of an untouched, thriving marine environment.

Keep an eye trained on the open water for giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis). These powerful hunters are often observed in hunting formations, darting in and out of bait balls or targeting unsuspecting reef fish. Their sudden bursts of speed and coordinated attacks are a thrilling spectacle, showcasing the raw energy of Komodo's ecosystem in full flow.
