Les deux mas

Les Deux Mas is a small guesthouse with three holiday homes, aimed at travellers who prefer their own front door, kitchen and terrace to a conventional hotel routine. You have a garden, a pool and space to settle into your own rhythm; breakfast times and restaurant dress codes do not get a vote here. The team speaks French.

The setup suits a couple wanting a self-contained base, but it also works for a family or a small group. Each unit is detached, on the ground floor and reached through a private entrance. That makes the practical side pleasantly straightforward when you return tired, sandy or carrying more bags than you left with.

There is free WiFi throughout the property, free private parking on site and a landscaped garden. A washing machine, outdoor dining area, barbecue and bicycle shelter add the sort of useful detail that matters more on a proper holiday than another decorative lobby.

You are in Bormes-les-Mimosas, in the Le Pin de Bormes area, at 59 Rue des Hortensias. Les Deux Mas sits inland from the coast rather than directly on the sand, so a car is useful for beach days and dive-centre departures. Grande Plage is about 2.1 miles away by road, with Plage de l'Anglade around 2.3 miles away.

The immediate surroundings are handy rather than theatrical. Pizza Vénitienne and Snack le Krusty are each roughly 750 feet away, while Le Louis d'Or is about 1,050 feet away. Parc du Cigalou is around 0.25 miles from the property, giving you somewhere nearby for a short stroll when a full excursion feels like overkill.

For a larger outing, Fort de Brégançon is about 4.2 miles away by road. Hyères railway station is roughly 12 miles away by road, and Toulon–Hyères Airport is about 11 miles away, with a drive of around 18 minutes. Saint-Tropez La Mole Airport is also around 11 miles away by road.

These are proper holiday homes rather than hotel rooms with a kettle pushed into one corner. For two, a one-bedroom house gives you a separate sleeping space, a living area with seating and a desk, plus a terrace and private entrance. For four, the two-bedroom house is the sensible choice: you gain room to spread out rather than attempting the traditional holiday exercise of storing everyone's belongings on one chair.

The kitchenette is equipped for self-catering, with a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, hob, toaster, coffee machine, kettle, dining table and kitchenware. That means you can make coffee before an early start, keep water cold for your return and put together something substantial when restaurant timing does not match your appetite. A washing machine is included as well.

Air conditioning helps take the edge off warm nights, while heating covers cooler periods. The units also have soundproofing, tiled or marble floors, a wardrobe or dressing room and extra-long beds. Terraces look towards the garden or another available view, and the accommodation is non-smoking. A private bathroom includes a shower or bath, toilet, towels and hairdryer; baby cots and a high chair are available on request.

The formula is accommodation only, so the table is yours to organise. Each holiday home has the equipment for breakfast, packed lunches or a late meal assembled with the calm efficiency of someone who has already spent enough energy underwater. The refrigerator, hob, microwave, dishwasher and dining table give you more room to eat properly than a minibar ever will.

Outside, you can use the barbecue and outdoor dining area, with a picnic area, garden furniture and sun terrace available around the property. It is the right sort of arrangement for a relaxed evening: no need to turn a simple meal into an expedition, and no need to leave the poolside just because hunger has finally caught up with you.

When you want somebody else to do the cooking, the nearby choices include Pizza Vénitienne, Snack le Krusty and Le Louis d'Or, all within roughly 750 to 1,050 feet. Bars such as La Panthere Rose and Le Mix are about 2 to 2.4 miles away by road, so a drink out is possible, but it is not a lift-away-from-the-door affair.

The outdoor swimming pool is the obvious place to cool down, with sun loungers or beach chairs and umbrellas around it. The garden and sun terrace give you alternatives when you have had enough water for one day but are not ready to sit indoors. A private terrace attached to your accommodation makes it easy to retreat without turning relaxation into a group activity.

For a gentler competitive outlet, there is a boulodrome and pétanque court. The rules are familiar, the pace is civilised and nobody needs to carry a tank to take part. Bicycle parking is available, and boating is possible in the surrounding area for a change of scenery away from the pool.

Families have practical support through baby safety gates, socket covers, board games and children's books, DVDs or music. The property also has an outdoor play area, while the ground-floor layout keeps daily movement simple. Parties are not allowed, so the evening leans towards a quiet meal, a game of pétanque or an early night rather than an impromptu festival.

Arrival is organised between 15:00 and 18:00, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time in advance. Departure is between 08:00 and 10:00, which is worth keeping in mind if your travel plans involve an early flight or a morning journey. Check-in has no age requirement, and children of all ages are welcome; children aged 18 and over are treated as adults for occupancy purposes.

Free private parking is available on site without a reservation, including a parking garage. WiFi is free in the accommodation and across the property. A communal laundry facility is available, and the accommodation itself also includes a washing machine. The units are all on one level, which is useful when you would rather not negotiate stairs with luggage, dive bags or a slightly uncooperative knee.

A refundable damage deposit is collected in cash on arrival and returned in cash at check-out following an inspection. Smoking is not allowed, pets are not accepted and parties or events are not permitted. For airport access, Toulon–Hyères Airport is about 11 miles away by road; arrange your onward transport around the stated arrival window rather than assuming a hotel shuttle will appear.
