La Pointe de la Galère, Port-Cros: a rocky dive with diverse marine life

La Pointe de la Galère is situated at the northeastern extremity of Port-Cros island, marking it as a significant dive within the National Park. The topography centers around a submerged rocky point that sharply drops to a maximum depth of 35 metres. From the surface, you'll orient yourself along this spine, which effectively divides two distinct underwater environments, each offering its own character and resident species. This geological feature is the primary focus of the dive, allowing a clear profile along its length.

As you descend, the rocky point splits the dive profile. To the east, you encounter extensive sandy bottoms, an environment that often hosts species well-adapted to camouflage and shifting sediments. In contrast, the western side of the point is dominated by dense Posidonia oceanica meadows. These seagrass beds provide crucial habitat and nursery grounds for a multitude of smaller organisms, creating a different type of hunting ground for visual exploration and macro opportunities. The contrast between these two ecosystems, side-by-side, is a defining element of this site.

Exploring the rock face itself reveals numerous crevices and holes, offering shelter for much of the site's resident fauna. A dive light is essential here to properly illuminate these hidden spaces and reveal what lies within; congres (Conger conger) and mostelles are frequently found tucked away. Langoustes (Palinurus elephas) are also present, often nestled deep within the larger rock formations. Patience and a steady hand with your light will yield the best observations in these darker recesses.

The site hosts a notable variety of fish life, including schools of barracudas (Sphyraena barracuda) that can be observed moving through the deeper, more exposed sections. Chapons (Scorpaena scrofa), or red scorpionfish, are particularly prominent here, often blending seamlessly with the rocky substrate. Sars (Sarpa salpa) and crénilabres paons cruise the mid-water and near-surface zones, adding to the dynamic visual landscape as you explore the point.

Benthic life is equally vibrant, with species like the striking étoiles de mer épineuses (Marthasterias glacialis) adding splashes of colour against the rock. Poulpes (Octopus vulgaris) are often seen in the shallower rocky areas, their camouflage making them a rewarding spot for attentive divers. The presence of Doris géant (Doris verrucosa), a large nudibranch, further enriches the detailed marine tapestry found on the rocks and in the Posidonia.

Visibility at La Pointe de la Galère is reliably clear, enhancing the overall dive experience and allowing for excellent appreciation of both the expansive landscapes and the intricate details of the marine life. The clear water contributes significantly to the feeling of serenity described by many divers. This consistent clarity makes the site particularly suitable for observing fish behaviour and exploring the nuances of the environment.

While the dive generally offers calm conditions, there is a possibility of current moving from east to west. This current, when present, tends to be more noticeable along the exposed tip of the rocky point. Divers should be prepared to manage light to moderate water movement, especially when navigating around the furthest extension of the point. Planning your dive to account for potential current ensures a more relaxed experience, particularly during your ascent and safety stop.

The shallower rocky areas on the western side also serve as ideal locations for safety stops. Here, around the smaller rock formations, you can comfortably complete your decompression obligations while continuing to observe marine life in the transition zone between the deeper point and the surface. This final phase of the dive offers a last opportunity to appreciate the varied ecosystem of La Pointe de la Galère before surfacing.
