Behind its old walls, Hôtel L'Abbaye gives you a stay with more character than a standard seafront block. This converted sixteenth-century monastery sits in the heart of Calvi, with a courtyard looking towards the sea and mountains, a shaded garden and a terrace where you can settle with a drink rather than immediately start discussing your kit configuration.

The atmosphere suits a couple who want the coast close by but still value a proper hotel setting. You are in Calvi, Corsica, right in the town centre and close to both the beach and the marina. The nearest beach and marina are about 0.1 mile away, while Calvi Train Station is roughly 0.2 mile from the hotel. Pinède Beach is the practical choice for a quick change of scenery, and Roncu Beach lies about 0.6 mile away.

The surrounding streets give you useful options when you fancy eating elsewhere: Sem Principio is about 0.1 mile away, with U Paisanu and L'Eden Port Calvi around 0.2 mile away. Calvi – Sainte-Catherine Airport is about 2.7 miles from the hotel; Bastia – Poretta Airport is roughly 59 miles away. The Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is around 0.5 mile away.

Travelling as three is easier in a suite or the Comfort Triple Room, where the sleeping arrangement includes a sofa bed; the suites also have a separate bathroom and more room to spread out.

The courtyard, terrace and garden give the property a softer edge than a purely urban hotel. When the day's plan is simply shower, air conditioning and a quiet hour with the television, the soundproof rooms and comfortable beds do the useful work. Daily housekeeping, bathrobes, slippers and toiletries are included, with accessible upper floors reached by lift.

Breakfast is a buffet served from 7.00, giving you a clear start before heading out for the day. You can also take breakfast in your room, which is handy when an early departure matters more than a leisurely table. The hotel does not present a full-day meal plan; dinner is the main restaurant service.

Unica Restaurant serves dinner on its terrace, with views towards the sea and mountains. Its cooking is gastronomic, seasonal and generous rather than built around a complicated slogan, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. Dinner runs from 19.00 to 22.30.

There is one bar, open throughout the day, plus a coffee house and snack bar for less formal stops. A minibar is available in the rooms, and room service operates during limited hours. In other words, you can have a proper dinner on site, a drink in the garden or a quieter coffee without turning every meal into an expedition.

The outdoor swimming pool is heated and stretches for 14 metres, giving you a sensible place for a gentle loosen-up when you are not heading back to the sea. Sun loungers, umbrellas, a sun terrace and the shaded garden cover the important business of doing very little without having to leave the property.

Snorkelling is also available, and outdoor activities including canoeing, windsurfing, horse riding, fishing and hiking can be arranged away from the property. Charges apply to several of these activities, so the useful point is the range, not a promise that every option is part of the room.

Check-in runs from 15.00 to midnight, with check-out from 07.30 to 11.00. The 24-hour reception, express check-in and check-out, luggage storage and concierge service make arrival and departure reasonably flexible, particularly when travel plans refuse to behave. An airport shuttle is available on request, and car hire can be arranged through the hotel.
