Calvi Plage, Corsica: First Dives and Training

Calvi Plage provides immediate access to a shallow, protected dive area directly from the beach. This site is distinct from the deeper, more advanced sites further out in the bay, focusing on accessible, calm conditions. You'll primarily encounter a seabed composed of a mix of rocky outcrops and sandy patches, forming a gentle topography that rarely exceeds 10 metres in depth. The sheltered nature of the bay ensures conditions are generally very mild, making it an ideal environment for new divers.

The dive profile here is straightforward, descending gradually from the shoreline into a consistent shallow plateau. This allows for extended bottom times at modest depths, which is beneficial for skill development and comfort building. You'll find scattered rock formations that create small habitats for resident species, interspersed with open sandy areas. The entire site is well-suited for repetitive dives and exercises, offering a consistent and manageable underwater landscape.

Beneath the surface, Calvi Plage supports a variety of common Mediterranean species. Look for damselfish (Chromis chromis) darting around rocky crevices, and various wrasse species (Labridae) navigating the bottom. You might spot bream (Sparidae) and mullet (Mugilidae) moving in schools across the sandy areas. While the depths are modest, these interactions offer valuable experience in observing marine behaviour without the complexities of deeper or more exposed sites.

As you explore, keep an eye out for bottom dwellers such as starfish (Asteroidea) and sea urchins (Echinoidea) clinging to rocks. Moray eels (Muraena helena) occasionally peek from their rocky shelters, and if you’re observant, you might spot an octopus (Octopus vulgaris) camouflaged against the seabed. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) blend remarkably well with the rocky environment, requiring a keen eye to spot, while saupe (Sarpa salpa) graze on algae. The calm conditions allow for careful observation of these creatures.
