The tone changes with the calendar. Outside the height of summer, the resort is geared towards taking things slowly, with the beach, gardens and spa close at hand. In summer, it becomes a livelier base for Saint-Tropez and the private beaches of Pampelonne. This is a place for couples who want their own kitchen and outdoor space, and for families who will actually use the clubs and activities rather than merely admire them on a brochure.

Your address is Saint-Tropez, France, directly on Pampelonne Beach. You have a private beach area with golden sand, sun loungers and parasols, rather than a hotel that merely claims to be near the coast and then sends you across a road, a car park and somebody else's holiday.

Saint-Tropez is about 3 miles away, close enough for an evening out or a market visit, but not under your window. The resort is surrounded by vineyards, and the Tuesday morning Saint-Tropez market is reachable by the resort's free bus service. Tahiti Beach is about 0.5 miles away, while the restaurants Café Flora, Les Palmiers and Neptune Plage are all within roughly 0.2 miles.

For arrivals by air, Saint-Tropez La Môle Airport is about 11 miles away by road. Toulon-Hyères Airport is about 33 miles away, and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport about 59 miles away. A car is useful for exploring the peninsula, although the resort also has an airport shuttle and a shuttle service that you can arrange with the property.

Think bungalow rather than conventional hotel room. Garden-facing accommodation gives you a more sheltered outdoor setting, while the three-bedroom bungalows are the sensible option for a larger group, with two bathrooms and room for up to six guests. The sea-view beach accommodation is the one to choose when the view is part of the holiday rather than a line in the booking process.

Inside, you have air conditioning, heating, a refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, stovetop, coffee machine, kettle and toaster. There is also a private entrance, terrace or outdoor furniture, a television with satellite channels, a wardrobe and a mosquito net. Beds can be made on arrival, and linen and towels are provided. A cot can be requested for a young child; there are no extra beds.

Breakfast is served at Café Flora, with continental, full English or Irish, vegetarian, gluten-free and buffet choices. That is a useful spread when your morning appetite changes with the previous day's exertions. You can also use the kitchen in your accommodation for something earlier, simpler or less sociable.

Lunch belongs at Playamigos, the beach restaurant where you can eat with your feet in the sand. Le Jardin des Galettes adds a crêpe bar for a lighter stop, and the resort also has a snack bar, a bar and an on-site coffee house. Massages include full-body, couples, head, neck, back, hand and foot treatments, with body scrubs, wraps and facial treatments also available.

You can take a more active route in the fitness centre, with cardio equipment, fitness classes and a sports coach. Tennis, cycling, football, pétanque, beach volleyball, table tennis and archery keep the day moving without requiring another appointment with the sea. Bicycle hire, cycling and local walking or cultural tours are also available, alongside visits to the Au Bec Fin conserverie, an olive grove, Port-Grimaud and Grimaud village.

Families have rather more structure available than a token play corner: a Kid's Club, Teens Club, Kasaï Land, indoor and outdoor play areas, games and organised activities. The clubs and adult and children's sports activities run during the summer season, while the concierge can help organise excursions. For an evening that does not involve another restaurant, live music and live sports broadcasts are available on site.

Check-in starts at 16:00 and check-out is by 10:00. You need photo identification and a payment card at arrival, and the resort needs your expected arrival time in advance. The minimum check-in age is 18. Quiet hours run from 01:00 to 07:00, worth remembering if your bungalow is close to the summer action.

Each bungalow includes one private parking space, large enough for one car, and an electric vehicle charging station is available on site. An airport shuttle and a general shuttle service are available through the resort. The 24-hour reception, concierge, tour desk, luggage storage, on-site cash machine, supermarket, minimarket, hairdressing and beauty services make the resort fairly self-contained.
