You come here for a straightforward seaside base rather than a resort programme. Hotel Alcyon puts you close to the beach, the town centre and the practical business of finding dinner without turning the evening into an expedition.

The atmosphere is shaped by its coastal position and small-hotel scale. You have a private balcony, air conditioning, soundproofed rooms and free WiFi throughout the hotel, which covers the essentials when the day has involved salt, sun and a fair amount of kit to dry on your person.

The hotel's website is available in English as well as French, so you can deal with the basics before travelling. Family rooms are available, and children of any age are welcome.

You are in Valras-Plage, France, at 11 Boulevard Michelet. The sandy beach is about 50 metres away, with direct access, while the town centre takes roughly five minutes on foot. This is a genuinely walkable setup: beach in one direction, shops and restaurants close by, and the lively casino nearby when you fancy something less aquatic for the evening.

The immediate area is useful rather than merely decorative. Traditional local restaurants sit around the hotel, with one restaurant virtually next door, while several bars are within a short walk. Plage Orpellieres is about half a mile away, and Casino Beach is about half a mile away on foot.

For arrivals by air, Béziers Cap d'Agde Airport is about 5 miles away. Montpellier-Méditerranée and Perpignan-Rivesaltes airports are both about 40 miles from Valras-Plage. Béziers railway station is about 7 miles away.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to sleep, not about choosing between grand resort categories. A Single/Double Room with its large bed suits a couple or a solo diver who prefers not to negotiate for mattress territory. The Twin Room gives two dive buddies their own beds, which is often the more civilised arrangement when the alarm is set for an early departure.

Family Room options use a double bed and bunk bed, while the broader selection also includes triple and quadruple layouts. Check the exact occupancy attached to your chosen room before booking, as the room cards define the permitted capacity for each option. The Economy Double Room is the compact choice; the larger Double Room gives you more room to spread out.

Every room has a private bathroom with a bath or shower, towels, toiletries and a hairdryer. A minibar is useful for keeping water close at hand, and the balcony with outdoor furniture gives you somewhere to sit without having to decamp to the nearest café. Air conditioning, heating, soundproofing, a wardrobe, a desk and a flat-screen TV cover the less glamorous but highly practical parts of a night beside the sea.

Breakfast is continental, giving you a practical start before heading out for the day. The hotel does not build the evening around an in-house restaurant or bar, so dinner is part of the Valras-Plage experience rather than a matter of descending one staircase and consulting a buffet.

That is not a hardship here. Restaurants serving traditional local cuisine are close to the hotel, with Sarl O Resto just a few steps away and further choices nearby. You can keep the walk short when hunger wins, or take the longer route through the town centre and see what catches your eye.

For a post-dive drink, Bar Artistic and La Galère are both around a five- to six-minute walk away. Toukai is further along at roughly half a mile. The minibar gives you a private back-up, but the local bars are the obvious choice when you want a drink that comes with a little street life.

The beach is the main piece of leisure equipment, and it starts almost at the door. You can walk down to the sand, use the sun umbrellas, or settle on the hotel's terrace with its outdoor furniture when the idea of another organised activity feels suspiciously energetic.

Walking tours and tours about local culture are available for days when you want to see more of the area without committing to a full-scale excursion. Valras-Plage itself supplies the easy options: a wander through the centre, a drink in town, or a slow return along the seafront.

There is also a casino nearby for an evening change of scenery. It is a modest after-hours menu, but that may suit you perfectly: beach, walk, dinner, perhaps a drink, then a room with air conditioning and a balcony. No compulsory entertainment, which is sometimes the whole point.

Check-in runs from 14:30 to 19:30, and the reception closes at 20:00. You need to bring photo identification and a credit card, and you should tell the hotel your expected arrival time. Check-out is from 08:00 to 11:00. Express check-in and check-out are available, and a wake-up service can help when the morning starts before your body has agreed to it.

Parking is available in nearby public spaces, with no reservation possible. The hotel also has free WiFi throughout, daily housekeeping, a safety deposit box and non-smoking rooms. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so factor that into your choice if you would rather not carry luggage upstairs after a long journey.
