Plongée à Tell Roche Fouras, Côte d'Azur: récif sous le sémaphore

Tell Roche Fouras is fundamentally a submerged rocky reef, situated at the foot of the Cap Camarat semaphore. As you descend, you’ll find a landscape defined by rock faces and typical coastal reef relief, rather than a sheer wall or an isolated pinnacle. The site begins virtually at the surface and slopes gently down, reaching its maximum depth of approximately 12 metres, making it an excellent profile for extending your bottom time and thoroughly exploring the details of the reef structure.

The topography here provides numerous hiding spots and micro-habitats within its rocky formations. You'll navigate a series of crevices and small overhangs, characteristic of a healthy Mediterranean coastal reef. This structure invites you to slow down, allowing for a detailed exploration of the smaller inhabitants and the interplay of light and shadow across the rocks as you follow the natural contours of the site. It's an environment that rewards careful observation.

Despite its shallow nature, the site supports a diverse community of marine life. You can expect to encounter groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) patrolling their territories among the larger rocks, while moray eels (Muraena helena) peer out from their hidden lairs. Schools of sea bream (Diplodus sargus) and barracuda (Sphyraena viridensis) often pass through the open water just above the reef, creating dynamic scenes as they move with the subtle currents. Wrasse (Labrus merula, Coris julis, Symphodus tinca) are nearly omnipresent, flitting between the rocks.

The defining characteristic of Tell Roche Fouras is its location within the 300-metre coastal band, directly beneath the Cap Camarat semaphore. This proximity to the coastline means conditions can be influenced by local boat traffic and swell, distinguishing it from the more exposed offshore sites further out from Cavalaire. While there isn't a persistent strong current, you should be mindful of boat movements at the surface, especially during your ascent and safety stop. It's a site that demands awareness of your surroundings both above and below the waterline.
