Joro Dive Center

JORO Dive Center is situated in the village of Amed, nestled at the base of the Agung volcano in the Karangasem region of northeast Bali. This coastal area is renowned for its unique combination of volcanic landscapes and highly diverse marine environments, ranging from shallow reef flats to dramatic drop-offs.

As an official SSI partner, the centre focuses on providing structured, safe, and personalised diving experiences. Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are an experienced diver seeking specific specialties like wreck or deep diving, the centre is positioned to access the best of the Amed and Tulamben coastlines.

The team is composed of professional SSI-certified instructors and divemasters dedicated to both training and guided exploration. They provide instruction in English, French, and Indonesian, ensuring clear communication for international divers.

The centre maintains a strong connection to the local community, being a family-owned operation. This local roots approach extends to their hospitality, including the on-site family restaurant, Warung HOKY, which serves divers throughout the day.

The centre offers a comprehensive range of SSI courses, beginning with the Try Scuba programme and the Open Water Diver certification. For those looking to progress, the Advanced Open Water Diver and Diver Stress and Rescue courses are available, alongside the Divemaster and Assistant Instructor programmes.

Specialty training is extensive, covering areas such as the Waves, Tides & Currents Specialty, Navigation Specialty, Night Specialty, and Perfect Buoyancy Specialty. Divers can also pursue technical or specific interest courses including the Deep Specialty, Wreck Specialty, and the EANx 32%+40% Specialty. For those needing to refresh their skills, a Scuba Skills Update is provided.

Full rental kit is available on-site for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, BCDs, and wetsuits, as well as specialized items such as dive computers and compasses available for hire.

For those looking to extend their bottom time, Nitrox is available. The centre provides Nitrox 32% in 11.1-litre cylinders, with larger 13 and 15-litre cylinders also available for those requiring more gas.

The marine life in the Amed and Tulamben region is exceptionally diverse. You will encounter a constant presence of reef fish, including various species of butterflyfish, triggerfish (Balistidae), and snapper schools. Larger animals such as Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), groupers (Epinephelus), and various species of turtles are frequently seen around the reefs and walls.

In the deeper sections and along the drop-offs, the ecosystem supports larger pelagic species. It is possible to spot tuna (Thunnus), jacks (Carangidae), and various reef sharks, including whitetip reef sharks (Triaenodon obesus) and blacktip reef sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus).

For macro enthusiasts, the area is a treasure trove. The sandy slopes and coral structures host a wide array of small creatures, including nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various species of shrimp (Caridea), and crabs (Brachyura). You can also find seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), ghost pipefish (Solenostomidae), frogfish (Antennarius), and various types of octopus and cuttlefish (Sepiidae).

Diving conditions in the area vary depending on the specific site. Many of the popular reefs are subject to varying currents, ranging from calm to moderate, while some sites like Seraya Secret or the 'Express' at Gili Selang can experience strong or changing currents.

Some locations, such as Bunutan Drift, are specifically designed for drift diving where the current carries you along the reef. It is important to note that certain sites are more easily accessed by boat, especially during certain tide levels.
