Hôtel La Bastide

La Bastide is a small hotel-restaurant with eight bedrooms, placed directly beside the water in Hyères. You come here for the useful sort of seaside stay: wake up near the beach, eat on a sea-facing terrace, and keep the evening simple rather than turning the whole thing into a logistical exercise.

The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, with the restaurant doing much of the work. Inside, the dining room mixes reclaimed objects, old farmhouse tables, Formica and gramophones, while a club-style sofa and a fireplace create a proper spot for an aperitif. Once a month, jazz and Bossa Nova concerts add a little rhythm to the place without making every evening a performance.

You are in La Capte, Hyères, on the route between the port and the village of Giens. The address sits directly on the seafront, with the beach immediately in front of the hotel and the Capte beach about 300 metres away on foot. Pesquiers beach is roughly 250 metres away, so you have more than one stretch of sand within easy reach.

The wider peninsula gives you room to move when you are not in the water. Les Pesquiers forest is about 700 metres away on foot, while Bergerie beach is around 1 mile away. For a change of scenery, Almanarre beach is roughly 1 mile away by road, Villa Noailles Art Centre is 6 miles away, and Hyères railway station is about 3.5 miles from the hotel. The nearest airport, Toulon–Hyères, is around 1.5 miles away.

The choice is fairly straightforward. If you are travelling as a couple and want to keep things compact, a Double Room covers the basics without asking you to pay for space you will not use. The Suite is the practical option when three people need to share, with more room to spread out and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower.

Every room has air conditioning, a refrigerator, an electric kettle and a flat-screen television. That refrigerator earns its keep when you return warm, thirsty and no longer interested in discussing the finer points of the dive. Air conditioning helps you recover from a long day in salt water, while free WiFi lets you deal with messages or check the next day's plans without leaving the room.

Bathrooms are private and include a shower, towels, a hairdryer and complimentary toiletries. The floors are tiled or marble, and heating is available for cooler nights. Upper floors are reached by stairs only, so bear that in mind if your knees have started keeping their own dive log.

The restaurant is the main reason to stay in rather than go searching for dinner elsewhere. La Bastide Restaurant serves lunch and dinner, with Mediterranean cooking built around homemade dishes, fresh seasonal ingredients, Provençal flavours and a few wider influences. Fish, grilled meats, shared plates and homemade desserts cover the ground after a day when a salad alone would be a poor joke.

You can eat outside on the terrace overlooking the sea, or choose the air-conditioned interior. The open kitchen keeps the preparation in view, while the dining room's second-hand furniture and old domestic details give it more personality than a standard hotel dining room. The restaurant has two dining spaces, both accessible to guests with reduced mobility.

Breakfast is continental, with fresh pastries. There is one bar, serving local and AOP wines alongside cocktails, including seasonal-fruit mojitos and a signature drink built around the taste and aroma of madeleine. A children's menu is available, as are special-diet menus on request. Restaurant opening follows a clear weekly rhythm: lunch and dinner are served except on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the restaurant closed from mid-November to mid-February.

The strongest leisure activity is the one directly outside: the beach. You can walk down to the water, settle on the sun terrace, or use the outdoor furniture and picnic area for a slower spell between swims. There is no need to build a complicated programme around it; the setting does the heavy lifting.

For a small outing, Les Pesquiers forest is close enough for a walk, and Hyères gives you historic sites and the Villa Noailles Art Centre within driving distance. If your idea of an evening out involves a chair, a drink and music rather than another excursion, the monthly jazz and Bossa Nova concerts fit the bill. Board games and puzzles are also available for the sort of weather day that makes the Mediterranean look briefly less persuasive.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 22:30, and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. The hotel accepts cash payments, and children of any age are welcome. A cot can be requested for children aged up to two, subject to the selected accommodation, while extra beds are not available. Pets are not allowed.

Toulon–Hyères Airport is roughly 1.5 miles away, about a three-minute drive. From the airport or the town, head towards the Port of Hyères and follow the road to Giens; La Capte lies midway between the port and Giens village. Parking is not available at the property, so plan your arrival and vehicle arrangements before travelling. The restaurant itself is fully accessible to guests with reduced mobility, while the upper floors of the hotel are reached by stairs only.

The hotel's website is available in English as well as French, which makes it easier for English-speaking guests to organise the stay before arrival. That is not the same as an English-speaking hotel team, so confirm any detailed arrival or dining request directly with the property.
