L'Oustaou de Porquerolles

L'Oustaou de Porquerolles is a small three-star hotel with six rooms, set in the historic village rather than in an isolated resort compound. You stay close to the port, the village square and the island's beaches, with the practical advantage of having a restaurant and bar downstairs when your legs have had enough of cycling, walking or simply being out in the sun.

The atmosphere is tied to the island itself: a working port, nearby shops, old stone and the sea within easy reach. Two rooms look towards the port and Mediterranean, three face Place d'Armes and the village, while the ground-floor room looks onto the courtyard. Choose this address if you would rather step straight into Porquerolles life than spend your evenings behind a resort gate.

The hotel stands on Place d'Armes, in the centre of Porquerolles, just 50 metres from the port. The sea is only a few steps away, while Courtade beach is about 0.5 miles on foot, roughly a ten-minute walk. Argent beach is about 0.8 miles away on foot, giving you another option when you fancy a change of sand and scenery.

The National Park is 300 metres away, so a short stroll takes you from the village into protected natural surroundings. The 15th-century fort is also 50 metres from the hotel. Shops and several other restaurants are close by, including L'Arche de Porquerolles and Lou Cigalou, both within a few minutes' walk.

Porquerolles is reached from the mainland by public-service shuttle or water taxi, with the crossing taking about 15 minutes. Toulon–Hyeres Airport is listed 6 miles away, but that figure does not remove the island crossing from your travel plans.

The standard double rooms are designed for two people, with a double bed and the essentials for a straightforward island stay. The choice is less about elaborate room categories than about outlook: the port-and-sea rooms give you the most maritime setting, while the rooms facing Place d'Armes put village life directly outside.

Every air-conditioned room has a flat-screen television, a safe, free Wi-Fi and a private bathroom with a shower, towels, a hairdryer and toiletries. Air conditioning matters here: after a hot day between beaches, paths and boats, being able to cool the room before sleep is more useful than another decorative flourish.

The ground-floor room faces the courtyard and is the smallest option in the hotel. That may suit you if the view matters less than having a simple base in the village. Children over one year are welcome, but cots and extra beds are not available, so the sleeping arrangements are best suited to the number of beds already provided.

The restaurant, L'Oustaou des Pêcheurs, serves lunch and dinner on its terrace. Its Mediterranean cooking is built around fresh seafood from local fishermen, including tuna, swordfish, wild fish, lobsters and octopus. The kitchen is open, so you can watch the team prepare the catch rather than wonder how far it has travelled before reaching the plate.

This is a useful arrangement for divers: you can eat at the hotel without organising another trip through the village, and the terrace keeps the meal connected to island life. The food is firmly centred on the sea, so this is the address for you if local fish matters more than an oversized international menu.

There is also a bar serving wines, cocktails and smoothies. Breakfast arrangements are not set out here, and there is no stated continuous snack service or late dinner service, so plan your morning and post-dive meals around the services that are actually available.

Porquerolles does much of the work once you leave the hotel. Cycling is one of the straightforward ways to explore the island, while the nearby beaches give you an easy change of pace when you want a day with less equipment and fewer decisions. Courtade is the closest named beach, about 0.5 miles away on foot.

The hotel also lists water-sports facilities, snorkelling, canoeing and fishing, as well as a tennis court. These options suit the days when you want to stay active without committing to another full underwater programme. A walk to the National Park, 300 metres away, offers a quieter outing through the island's protected landscape.

There is no spa programme to build your evening around, which is hardly a crisis on an island where the village, port and beaches are on the doorstep. After a demanding day, you can simply take a shower, find a drink at the bar and let the restaurant handle the next decision.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 20:00, and check-out is by 11:00. The minimum age for check-in is 18. Children older than one year are welcome, but the hotel does not provide cots or extra beds, so check the existing sleeping arrangements carefully if you are travelling with more than two people.

Public parking is available nearby, with no reservation possible and charges that may apply. That matters on an island: plan where you will leave the car before concentrating on the crossing. The hotel can be reached from the mainland by public-service shuttle or water taxi, and the journey to Porquerolles takes about 15 minutes.
