Pierre et Vacances is a three-star seaside resort in the Cap Esterel village, aimed at guests who want more than a room and a key: pools, restaurants, a bar, sport and evening entertainment are all gathered in one pedestrian setting.

You can make this work as a diving base, particularly if you are travelling with a partner or family who want their own agenda between outings. There is a heated pool, a spa, a beach within walking distance and enough on site to keep a non-diver occupied. It is a sizeable resort rather than a small hideaway, so expect village activity and plenty of choice rather than the hushed atmosphere of a boutique hotel.

The address is in Agay, Saint-Raphael, on the French Mediterranean coast. The residence overlooks Agay Bay and sits beside the sea, in a pedestrian village with the Esterel Massif as its inland backdrop. Pourrousset Beach is about 0.4 miles away on foot, with sun loungers and parasols, while Pointes Longues and Agay Beach are also within walking distance at roughly 0.7 and 0.9 miles respectively.

You are not cut off from useful transport. Agay railway station is around 0.8 miles away on foot, and Le Dramont station is about 1.6 miles away. Several restaurants sit close by, including Le Grand Bleu at roughly 250 feet on foot, with Scarparo le Bluegreen and Le Tire Bouchon also nearby. For a change of scenery, the Belvedère is about 350 yards away, while the Forêt Domaniale de l'Estérel and the Esterel Massif are around 5 miles away.

The rooms are set up for straightforward recovery rather than grand hotel theatre. Air conditioning matters when the Mediterranean has spent the day warming you, while a balcony or terrace gives you somewhere to sit with a drink and let the day come down a notch. Every room has a private bathroom with a shower and hairdryer, plus a television and WiFi.

For two, choose the sea-view option if looking across Agay Bay is part of the point of coming here; the sea-view double room uses twin beds, so it suits divers who prefer separate sleeping space. Couples wanting one shared bed have the standard double option with its terrace or balcony. The triple rooms give two adults and one other guest a practical arrangement, while the quadruple room adds a sleeping alcove with bunk beds for a family group.

Beds are made on arrival, which removes one small job from the first evening. A minibar is available in the accommodation, useful for keeping a cold drink close at hand, and the residence has a lift, heating, family rooms and facilities for disabled guests. Quiet hours run from 22:00 to 08:00, a useful detail if you are trying to sleep before an early start.

Breakfast is a buffet, with service from 07:30, and the accommodation is available on a half-board basis. That gives you a sensible structure for a diving day: get something substantial in before heading out, then return to a proper evening meal rather than assembling dinner from whatever survived in your bag.

Le Jardin de l'Esterel serves breakfast and dinner on a terrace facing the Cap Esterel golf course, the sea and the aquatic area. Dinner runs from 19:00 to 21:00, with a more refined style of cooking. For something less formal, La Calanquaise is the pizzeria, with pizzas to eat there or take away.

There is one named bar, Le Café des Iles. It combines cocktails with ice creams, snacks, homemade crêpes and waffles, plus cheese, charcuterie and mixed sharing boards. A snack bar and restaurant are also listed among the on-site facilities, while the wider residence has six restaurants in total. In other words, you can keep things simple, but you are not tied to one menu every night.

Five outdoor pools give you several ways to spend a non-diving day, although their opening periods differ. The continuously heated 380 m² pool has a landscaped beach area, while another 455 m² pool includes a paddling pool, children’s facilities and water slides. A further 1,100 m² pool adds whirlpools, water jets, a slide and a paddling pool; the resort also has a heated outdoor pool and a second unheated pool with seasonal opening.

Esterel Forme is the place for a more deliberate recovery session, with massages, facials, a hammam, hydromassage baths and marine treatments. Thalassotherapy and balneotherapy packages are available. If your legs need movement rather than another chair, you can use the fitness facilities and join stretching, muscle-strengthening, circuit-training or aquagym sessions.

There is tennis, golf, mini golf, table tennis, archery and horse riding, with some activities carrying an additional charge. You can also join boat outings to islands, waterfalls or a market, or take part in a snorkelling excursion. Evening entertainment includes concerts, quizzes, blind tests and dance evenings. Families have a kids’ club for children aged 3 to 11, with children’s activities and dedicated pool areas; the Les P’tits Mômes micro-nursery caters for babies and toddlers during school holidays.

The residence is in a pedestrian village, with private parking on site and a minimarket within the resort. WiFi is available throughout the hotel, and the facilities include luggage storage, a 24-hour front desk, a cash machine, laundry and dry-cleaning services. Pets are welcome on request. There is also a barber and beauty shop, along with clothing and sports shops for the item you forgot to pack.

Check-in is from 17:00 and check-out is by 10:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and you should give the property your expected arrival time in advance; early check-in and late check-out are available on request. The nearest railway option is Agay station, about 0.8 miles on foot, which may suit you if you would rather avoid arriving with the usual mountain of dive luggage in a hire car.

The resort holds Green Key certification, or Clef Verte, for its environmental approach. Its measures include reducing energy and water consumption, using products carrying an environmental label, recovering waste and training its teams.
