Domaine de la Mer is a small three-star beachfront hotel for divers who want the sea close, a proper place to eat, and a room where the air conditioning can do its useful work when the day has involved sun, salt and a wetsuit. The property has 24 rooms, with a private sandy beach, a sea-view swimming pool and outdoor spaces set between the hotel and the water.

You will be understood in English as well as French, which makes the practical business of arranging a meal, asking about the room or sorting out a late arrival rather less awkward. The atmosphere leans towards simple seaside living: beach access, a restaurant with its feet in the sand, and enough on site to keep you from having to organise every minute.

You are not stranded on a decorative strip of coast with nothing but a postcard for company. From June to September, the Foodtruck works on the beach for lunch and dinner, with simple food and cocktails between swims. There is also the Comptoir de Noé, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner indoors with air conditioning and local cooking from November to May. In other words, the dining arrangement changes with the season rather than pretending August and January are the same holiday.

Breakfast is a buffet with fresh pastries, cheese, fruit and juice. A coffee house, snack bar, restaurant and beach bar are also part of the property’s food and drink options, with special-diet menus available on request. Evening entertainment adds a little life to the later part of the day without requiring a separate expedition into town.

There is also a swimming pool with a view, plus a sun terrace, garden and outdoor furniture. For many people, that will be enough: a chair, a drink and no timetable demanding attention.

Canoeing and windsurfing are available, with charges applying, and boat trips and snorkelling excursions give couples a way to get back on the water without putting a tank on their back.

The spa offers massage, including full-body, back, neck and foot treatments. Walking tours, children’s outdoor play equipment and books, DVDs or music for children broaden the appeal for mixed-age groups, while evening entertainment gives the evening something to do beyond comparing dive logs.

Check-in runs from 16:00 to 23:00 and check-out from 08:00 to 11:00. Express check-in and check-out are available, and luggage storage can help if your travel plans do not line up neatly with those hours.
