Le Catalan

Le Catalan is a three-star hotel built into the hillside above Banyuls-sur-Mer, with the sea spread out below and the village within walking distance. Its 35 rooms, balconies and outdoor pools make it a sensible base for a diving break when you want somewhere to come back to, rather than another anonymous room near the coast.

You will be understood in English here, as well as in French, German, Spanish and Catalan. That matters when you are discussing dinner, arranging your arrival or trying to explain that the key card has once again chosen a life of independence. The atmosphere is residential and away from the bustle of the village, with sea views doing much of the visual work.

For a couple, the sea-view rooms and the terrace restaurant give the stay a straightforward rhythm: breakfast, water, a swim or treatment, then dinner without having to organise the evening from scratch. Families are catered for too, with family rooms and a menu for children.

You are in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, on the heights above the village and overlooking Banyuls bay. The sea and the village centre are both around 0.3 miles away, while the marina is also about 0.3 miles from the hotel. A seaside creek is roughly a five-minute walk away, so the coast is close without the hotel being planted directly on the waterfront.

Fontaulé beach is about half a mile away on foot, with loungers and parasols available there. Troc beach is around 1 mile away, and the coastal path starts close by, giving you a route towards Collioure in one direction and the Spanish border in the other. This is hill-country, so the return journey from the water is not entirely theoretical; the view is doing its bit to justify the slope.

Banyuls-sur-Mer railway station is around 0.9 miles away on foot. Collioure Royal Castle is about 7 miles away, while Parc de Valmy is around 6 miles away. Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport is approximately 26 miles from the hotel, around 40 minutes by car, and Girona–Costa Brava Airport is roughly 54 miles away.

The practical choice is between looking at the Mediterranean and looking inland. The Double Room with Sea View suits a couple who want the balcony and the bay to be part of the room rather than something visited only on the way to breakfast. Twin rooms with sea views make more sense when separate beds matter, while the mountain-view rooms keep the same basic room size and give you the quieter inland outlook.

For a small group, the Triple Room is the useful option; for solo trips, the Single Room keeps things simple. The Junior Suite with Sea View adds a proper bathroom and keeps the focus on the panorama. Room categories are compact rather than sprawling, so choose the view and bed arrangement carefully rather than expecting to turn the room into a second lounge.

Air conditioning is fitted throughout the bedrooms, which is useful when you return warm, salty and ready to collapse horizontally. Soundproofing and soundproof rooms help keep the night settled, while a minibar, safe, wardrobe and dressing room cover the ordinary business of looking after yourself and your belongings. Every room has a private balcony as a standard feature, although the outlook depends on the category: sea views for some, mountain views for others.

Breakfast is served as a buffet, with continental, vegetarian and gluten-free choices. That should cover the early appetite and the more cautious one, although breakfast hours are not specified, so you will want to check the timing if you have an unusually early departure.

There is a bar on site, plus a coffee house, wine and champagne service, and minibars in the rooms. Special-diet menus are available, and the kitchen can prepare a tailored menu for a special occasion. The hotel also offers themed dinner nights and live music or performances, giving you the option of staying in when the legs have had quite enough of the day.

Two outdoor swimming pools give you somewhere to stretch out without going back to the beach. They are open from May to October, subject to the weather, and come with sea views, sun loungers, umbrellas and a sun terrace. There is also a heated indoor swim spa outside the summer period, so the water does not disappear completely when the calendar turns less Mediterranean.

The Hammam di Kouca spa offers a hammam, jacuzzi, massages, body treatments and facial treatments, with manicure, pedicure and beauty services also available. Couples can book a couples massage, while a head, back, neck or foot massage is aimed at the particular collection of muscles that has been complaining since the last descent. A fitness centre is available as well, although the spa is likely to win the argument on a slower afternoon.

For fresh air, the coastal path is close to the hotel and supports proper walking rather than a decorative stroll to the car park. Local excursions can take you towards Collioure, Port-Vendres or Cadaqués. Nearby activities also include sailing, fishing, boat excursions, canoeing, cycling and snorkelling, while walking tours, local-culture sessions, temporary art galleries and selected themed evenings add options for a non-diving day.

Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport is around 26 miles away, with a drive of about 40 minutes. Airport shuttle service is available through the hotel. If you are driving, free private parking is available on site without reservation, with an electric-vehicle charging station; locked garages are also available. The hotel is on the Route de Cerbère, on the hillside above Banyuls-sur-Mer.

Check-in runs from 15:30 to midnight, and check-out from 08:00 to 12:00. A 24-hour reception, luggage storage and a wake-up service are useful for travel days, particularly when transport and tides have not consulted one another. The lift serves the upper floors, and the hotel has facilities for disabled guests.
