Caball Bernat: Canyon Diving on the Côte d'Azur Border

Caball Bernat sits on the edge of the Banyuls-Cerbère integral marine reserve, making it a unique frontier dive on the Côte d'Azur. The boat moors in around 10 metres of water on a rocky base, positioning you to begin your descent directly into the reef's distinctive topography. Unlike some of the flatter sites nearby, Caball Bernat offers a dramatic underwater landscape from the moment you enter the water.

The core of the dive follows a series of canyons, cut perpendicular to the coastline. These formations are sculpted from coralligenous rock, creating intricate gullies and pronounced relief. As you navigate these natural channels, you’ll find yourself moving deeper, with the rocky structures eventually giving way to a sandy seabed at depths around 20 to 22 metres. This transition zone between rock and sand often reveals different marine life.

Within the shelter of these coralligenous formations, you can expect encounters with a range of resident species. Look for dusky groupers patrolling their territories and barracuda often schooling in the bluer water above the reef. Moray eels can be found tucked into the crevices, while octopuses camouflage themselves among the rocks. Sea bream, brown meagre, and various wrasse species are also common sights, moving through the reef's complex structure.

The site's location on the border of the marine reserve means it receives less traffic than some other dive spots, primarily due to the absence of a permanent mooring buoy. This reduced human impact contributes to a more pristine environment, allowing the coralligenous and rocky scenery to thrive undisturbed. The verticality and definition of the canyons here stand out, offering a more engaging dive profile compared to some of the area’s more subdued reef formations.
