Wreck Le Pythéas: Coastal exploration in Port-Vendres

The Pythéas offers a distinctive shore dive experience, unlike many deeper wreck sites you might encounter. Situated at the entrance to Port-Vendres harbour, its remnants are spread across a rocky strip and at the foot of the cliff, making for a dive profile that follows the contours of the natural seabed. You'll descend into an area where rock formations meet scattered pieces of maritime history, creating a combined natural and artificial reef.

As you explore, you'll encounter various parts of the wreck: the stern, sections of the boiler, and discernible frames, along with anchors and their chains still resting on the seabed. A significant portion of the wreck is cradled within a rocky hollow, offering a natural shelter and focal point for exploration. The integration of these man-made structures with the natural rock provides a varied landscape to navigate, from open seabed to more intricate rock formations.

This site is particularly notable for its exceptionally shallow depth for a wreck, allowing for extended bottom times and thorough exploration without the typical depth constraints. Nudibranchs add splashes of colour, grazing on the fixed life that colonises the surfaces.

Schools of bream patrol the area, often gathering around the larger wreck sections or rock formations. Keep an eye out for sunfish, which can sometimes be seen in the open water sections, a less common but rewarding sighting. The fixed life on the neighbouring rocks is also noteworthy, with sponges and corals contributing to the site's biodiversity, particularly around the boiler and anchor areas.

The accessibility of Le Pythéas from the shore, specifically from the end of the jetty at the harbour exit, adds to its appeal, making it a convenient option for a dive. You can gear up and enter the water directly on foot, bypassing the need for a boat.
